Fire Island Light Crew - Heather Gray

A super durable, heavyweight fleece crewneck sweatshirt featuring our Fire Island Light print. These sweatshirts were imported from a mill in Canada know for their superior quality, comfort and construction. 

The Fire Island Lighthouse began operation on November 1, 1858, illuminated by a "state-of-the-art first order Fresnel lens, an intricate beehive-shaped mass of brass and glass prisms, rotating on a clockwork assembly" 166 feet above sea level. This image, inspired by an original Fire Island Guide in our Library, showcases and celebrates this original structure.

Initially lit by whale oil, the light served as a beacon to mariners from 1858 to 1933 before being taken out of service and displayed at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. In 2011 the 16 foot-tall lens was brought back to the original Fire Island Lighthouse location, and is today on display in a building specifically designed for this historic artifact.
